Understanding the Rise of Suicide Among Men in Trinidad and Tobago: Insights and Solutions

Introduction: In recent years, Trinidad and Tobago has witnessed a troubling trend: a significant increase in suicides, particularly among men. According to data from the Ministry of Health, there has been a 25 per cent rise in suicides over the last eight years. Between 2016 and 2019, 371 lives were lost to suicide, averaging 93 suicides per year. Shockingly, between 2020 and 2023, this number rose to 478, averaging 120 suicides annually. These statistics paint a grim picture of the mental health crisis facing our nation. Understanding the Factors: Several factors contribute to the rise of suicide among men in Trinidad and Tobago. One major factor is the stigma surrounding mental health issues, particularly among men. Society often expects men to be strong and resilient, leading many to suffer in silence rather than seek help for their struggles. Additionally, economic challenges, relationship issues, substance abuse, and access to means of self-harm also play significant roles. The Role of Men of Purpose: Men of Purpose, led by R. Irvin Paddier, recognizes the urgent need to address mental health issues and combat the rising suicide rates among men in Trinidad and Tobago. Our organization is dedicated to empowering men to overcome obstacles and live fulfilling lives. We understand that mental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, and we are committed to providing support and resources to those in need. What Men of Purpose is Doing: 1. Awareness Campaigns: Men of Purpose conducts awareness campaigns to educate the community about mental health issues and reduce the stigma surrounding seeking help. 2. Support Groups: We offer support groups where men can share their experiences in a safe and non-judgmental environment. These groups provide a sense of community and belonging, reducing feelings of isolation. 3. Counseling and Coaching: Through our partnership with Irvin Life Coach, we offer counseling and coaching services to help men navigate their mental health challenges. Our goal is to equip men with the tools and strategies they need to cope with stress, anxiety, and depression effectively. 4. Crisis Intervention: In collaboration with mental health professionals, Men of Purpose provides crisis intervention services to individuals in acute distress. We aim to intervene early and provide immediate support to prevent tragic outcomes. Conclusion: The rise of suicide among men in Trinidad and Tobago is a complex issue that demands urgent attention and action. By addressing the underlying factors contributing to this trend and providing comprehensive support and resources, we can work together to prevent further loss of life and promote mental well-being in our community. #1Duck Story

I read a story of a duck and a boy by the name of Johnny who was shooting rocks with a slingshot. He could never hit his target. As he returned to Grandma’s backyard, he spied her pet duck. On impulse he took aim and let fly. The stone hit, and the duck was dead. The boy panicked and hid the bird in the woodpile, only to look up and see his sister Sally watching but she said nothing.

After lunch the next day Grandma said, “Sally, let’s wash the dishes.” But Sally said, “Grandma, Johnny told me he wanted to help in the kitchen. Then she whispered to him, “Remember the duck?” So Johnny did the dishes.

Later that day, Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go fishing and Grandma said, “I’m sorry but I need Sally to help make supper.” Sally just smiled and said,” Well that’s all right because Johnny told me he wanted to help.” She whispered again, “Remember the duck?” So Sally went fishing and Johnny stayed to help.!

After several days of Johnny doing both his chores and Sally’s… he finally couldn’t stand it any longer.

He came to Grandma and confessed that he had killed the duck. Grandma knelt down, gave him a hug, and said, “Sweetheart, I know. You see, I was standing at the window and I saw the whole thing, but because I love you, I forgave you. I was just wondering how long you would let Sally make a slave of you.”

The Christian life is a life of WARFARE. We are called to be good soldiers of the Lord Jesus Christ and “to war a good warfare.”

The reason why the Christian life is a warfare is that we have a terrible enemy who seeks to destroy us. That enemy is Satan. The Bible warns us,

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour.” 1 Peter 5:8

The Lord Jesus Christ came into the world to destroy the works of the devil. The Bible says,

“For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” 1 John 3:8

Those who choose Jesus Christ as their Lord are delivered from the power of Satan. The Bible says,

“Giving thanks unto the Father…who has delivered us from the power of darkness, and brought us into the kingdom of His dear Son.” Colossians 1:12-13

God has given us “the blood of the Lamb” as our defense against Satan’s accusations. He has also given us a weapon to use against Satan himself. That weapon is “the word of our testimony.” This means that we can declare to Satan the great facts of Christ’s victory over him.

We can say to Satan, “You are defeated! Jesus Christ is Lord! Jesus is Victor! Jesus is King! I am one with Him!”

The #1 Prayer Response Army

With the insane level of uncertainty that is facing the world. Believers are responding with prayer. There is no better time than now for God’s people to respond to the devastation that is plaguing our every day lives.

The development of Covid-19 has been as rapid as it has been deadly. In the space of a few months it has turned from a minor news item from a part of China few of us had heard of, to the global pandemic that has been the stuff of disaster planning for the last 50 years.

From November 2020 till the writing of this article men and women have been gathering every Sunday 4:30PM (ECT) and every Tuesday 6:30PM of which every other Tuesday is dedicated to prayer and encouragement for businesses.

Church Leaders Are Responding to COVID-19 Challenges:

Churches are affected. Meeting for worship, Bible study, and fellowship, Christian congregations often represent the largest weekly gatherings in their communities. Church members sit near one another. They shake hands. They hug. They share meals. However, those routine interactions can easily facilitate disease transmission from one person to another.

So, what should church leaders do to keep members safe? How can churches protect themselves and spread the Gospel at the same time?

We have engaged the technology via zoom to connect with powerful men and women of God from all over the world to prayer with one voice to God.

Here are three ways we responded to the dangers and disruptions associated with the coronavirus pandemic.

  1. Prayer for Personal Revival

Believers are not immune to anxiety. He should strive to know, Jesus and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings (Philippians 3:10). “That I may know Him”. Develop a holy dissatisfaction. Ask God to grant you a holy desire to seek Christ in the Written Word.

2. Prayer for the local Church and Ministries

The church that prays for revival prays for a great awakening (Acts 3:19-20). There is a reason the revivals in early America are referred to as the Great Awakenings. If there is anything needed today it is an awakening from our slumber.

We are so sleepy toward God, even the best among us. Our God-sensibilities, by and large, are so dreary that many Christians no longer even pick up their Bible. Entertainment has dulled us, yes, but the problem is deeper than that.

We haven’t merely been entertained by other things, we have failed to be awed by God. The church that prays for revival, then, is praying for an awakening to God. They are praying for times of refreshing from the Lord.

3. Prayer for the Nation

The disciples of Jesus are the salt of earth and the light of the world (Matthew 5:13-16). If we lose our saltiness or hide our light, what hope will be left for the lost people of our nation? Our relentless cry must join with the psalmist:

Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you? (Psalm 85:6)

Prayer and repentance are two of the chief means by which God accomplishes His purposes. The Fathers will be hearing and responding to the cries of His children.

The Prayer Response Army

Prayer
Pray these prayers for revival of God’s people. Pray with zealous passion and determination to have what you seek, according to the word of God (Luke 18:1-8).

  1. I exalt you, King of the nations, who righteously reigns over the earth in perfect wisdom and strength.
  2. I praise You, Father, for the (call your country) and for all of its blessings.
  3. I thank You, God, for the Church You have raised up in (call your country) from generations past through today.
  4. Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we praise You now for Your love and power to do the impossible.

5 Psalms for Men Who Are Struggling

I am glad you’ve taken the time to read this today. So many times we as men are struggling, we make the wrong choices in life but in order for men to get help we have to make the right choice, and coming to this article is one of the best decision you would make in your life.

Real men feel an internal drive to provide for their families, to take care of their wife, and to contribute to communities. Often times we are struggling in this pursuit and with the expectations others may put on us. We tend to ignore the Grace of God and replace it with heavy weights that sink us deeper into the abyss.

Turn to the Psalms

If you are a man that is struggling in silence, then turn to the Psalms. In them, you find strong men revealing how they too were struggling, how they were weak and ashamed, and showing you where you can turn to for help.

There are five Psalms in particular that give you grace for the difficult situations you face.

1. Psalm 27:1  ” The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?”

God is illuminating the darkness of trouble in your life, anxiety, and danger are decreasing; He is  giving you life and joy.

2. Psalm 127, ” Unless the Lord build the house, those who build it labor in vain”

In our brokenness and sin, we are useless against the power of darkness. We will never succeed well in our attempts, bring it to perfection, or have any comfort in it. The success of all our undertakings depends so entirely upon God’s blessing.

3. Psalm 29:11 “The LORD will give strength to his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace.”

Over every terrible raging element God is enthroned, directing and restraining by sovereign power; and the comfort of His people. “This awful situation in your life is no match for this God of ours, our Father and our Love.”

4. Psalm 56 “Be merciful to me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresses me.”

If we obtain mercy there, we need no more to make us happy. It implies likewise our best plea, not our merit, but God’s mercy, His free, rich mercy.

5. Psalm 51 “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your loving kindness: according to the multitude of your tender mercies blot out my transgressions.”

David does not hide his sin but rather confesses that he has sinned against the Lord. He repents knowing he can no longer walk in his foolish and sinful ways. He also prays that God would forgive him, cleanse him, and restore the joy of his salvation.

Men because Christ gave His life for us, our days of struggling are over. My prayer is that as you pray to God rest in the peace, assurance, strength, and forgiveness that only He can give.

What God says…. about the Family Institution

Trinidad and Tobago’s family structure is under tremendous pressure. April 12th is judgment day on whether the buggery law would stay or be repealed.

Who has the final say about  the family? God does!

The Church of Trinidad and Tobago must now look at what God allows. When God allows something to happen its either for blessing or for judgment.

God allows things t be shaken to reveal His unshakable Kingdom. Hebrews 12:25 -29;  “25 See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject Him who warns from heaven. 26 At that time His voice shook the earth, but now He has promised, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” 27 This phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of things that are shaken—that is, things that have been made—in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain.28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, 29 for our God is a consuming fire.”

The Church of Trinidad and Tobago is in a divided and backslidden state. How can we the Church, the Bride of Jesus Christ expect the nation to be peaceful when we are in open fights with each other.

The role of the Church is to represent the Kingdom of God to our families, community, city, our nation and the world. To be salt and light.

Salt and Light

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify our  Father in heaven -Mattew 5:13-16.

The World’s Agenda

The world’s agenda that is being pushed by television, social media, movies, music etc is a homosexual agenda that is not based on truth. The reason alot of church goers are confused is because they have bought into what the media is saying and not what the Lord God said.

When you bind a man and a woman in stable relationships their family is better and society is better. In the history of the world there has never been a successful “gay nation”.

The society today is confusing the phrase love, because there argument is “if God loves us why should anybody tell them same sex family is wrong?”

When you love a person biblically you do what’s best for that person. I love you but I have to agree with what God has to say about love.

It’s very disheartening to see comments that the Church is homophobic because the Church agrees with what God has to say about marriage.

God created marriage very early in the history of mankind. Marriage is between one man and one female, and who are we to attempt to redefine that. When the family is in chaos the nation is in chaos. God created the family not just for marriage but also for procreation.

Whether you thinks its right and I think its wrong is irrelevant. God has already clearly defined the institution of family.

The institution of family is under attack. And there are alot of church goers that says they are just going to love people and not hurt their feelings,  out of the fear of being called a bigot or homophobic.

We should minister in love but not endorsing what they are doing. Remember its not love that sets people free it truth!

My Brother’s Keeper – Thanksgiving Celebration

Welcome! Men of Purpose welcomes you and thank you for taking the step to register for our second annual Men Thanksgiving, this year the venue will be at Siparia Open Bible,  Tuesday 19 June 3pm. “My Brother’s Keeper” is the theme and we hope to provide you with adequate information so you can resurrect and maximize the Spirit of God within you and Energize your God given gifts in order to unleash the leader within you, so you will be able to stand firm with conviction and purpose.

So are we supposed to be the keepers of other brethren? Yes!

We are not to commit acts of violence against one another. This includes violence of the tongue in the form of gossip and “quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder” (1 Corinthians 12:20).

We are to exhibit brotherly love toward our brothers and sisters in Christ with a tender heart and a humble mind (1 Peter 3:8). In this way, we “keep” those for whom Christ gave His life.
PURPOSE AND MISSION

We believe that worship is one of the most important things we do. The men ministry of your church is invited to minister through choirs, worship teams, testimony, spoken word, dance, drama, instrumental etc, lifting up the name of Jesus.

You will be joining men from around the country in prayer, worship and fellowship where the presence of God will be evident. Expect healing, financial restoration, and the end of drought in your life.

Please note early registration is important to put together the program. Should you have any questions email us; menofpurpose85@gmail.com

We would be  having a grand dinner and fellowship afterwards,  your registration is crucial to us for catering services.

So, as Sons of God, we are to be our brother’s keeper. As Paul wrote, “Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify (build up) another” (Romans 14:19).

How to glorify God in a suicidal situation?

How can I glorify God? Is that even possible? It is difficult in itself to wrap my simple mind around the greatness of God, The Father, The Son and last but not at all least The Holy Spirit.

When I journey through the Word of God aka The Bible I overwhelmed with excitement. Within the span of a few pages you can go from being captivated by the rich and authentic history to being moved to tears by the love of God.

So is it possible to glorify God?

Well according to the Prophet Isaiah we were created for His glory “Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yes, I have made him.” (Isaiah 43:7).

What is the origin of the word “glorify” in the Bible?

glorify, beautify, embellish, ornament, adorn

לְרוֹמֵם

lift, exalt, glorify, aerate

לְשַׁבֵּחַ

praise, commend, compliment, applaud, laud, glorify

לְהוֹדוֹת

admit, thank, confess, acknowledge, avow, glorify  לְפַאֵר
Men may glorify God, that is, give to Him the worship and reverence which are His due (Isaiah 24:1525:3Psalms 22:23Daniel 5:23Matthew 5:16.)

If I’m disobeying God’s Word, then I’m sinning and not glorifying Him. It’s an overarching principle to govern all of life: Live so as to glorify God (1 Cor. 10:31). Psalm 115 is not comprehensive, but as far as it goes, it tells us how to live that way:

Because God alone is to be glorified, avoid all idolatry, seek God for all your needs, and praise Him all your days.

C. H. Spurgeon said (Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit [Pilgrim Publications], 48:294, 295,

If you meet with a system of theology which magnifies man, flee from it as far as you can…. Here is a test for you to apply, and by it you may tell whether a thing is true or not. Does it glorify God?Then, accept it. If it does not, if it glorifies man—puts human will, human ability, human merit, into the place of the mercy and the grace of God—away with it, for it is not food fit for your souls to feed upon.

When situations takes an unexpected turn in our life and we spend more of our time dealing with it, we become stressed out and very unsatisfied. It is however in these perilous times that we are called to glorify God. I know praising God in a moment of hopeessness is very unnerving and against every emotion in you but this is what wants from us.
God specializes in your chaotic situation.  He’s an expert in disaster zones. When you glorify God He raises you out of your mess and turns it into your message of His love for you. Worrying about sickness and calamity doesn’t give you anything but more worry but giving it to God by praising Him results in Jesus taking it away.
