Understanding the Rise of Suicide Among Men in Trinidad and Tobago: Insights and Solutions

Introduction: In recent years, Trinidad and Tobago has witnessed a troubling trend: a significant increase in suicides, particularly among men. According to data from the Ministry of Health, there has been a 25 per cent rise in suicides over the last eight years. Between 2016 and 2019, 371 lives were lost to suicide, averaging 93 suicides per year. Shockingly, between 2020 and 2023, this number rose to 478, averaging 120 suicides annually. These statistics paint a grim picture of the mental health crisis facing our nation. Understanding the Factors: Several factors contribute to the rise of suicide among men in Trinidad and Tobago. One major factor is the stigma surrounding mental health issues, particularly among men. Society often expects men to be strong and resilient, leading many to suffer in silence rather than seek help for their struggles. Additionally, economic challenges, relationship issues, substance abuse, and access to means of self-harm also play significant roles. The Role of Men of Purpose: Men of Purpose, led by R. Irvin Paddier, recognizes the urgent need to address mental health issues and combat the rising suicide rates among men in Trinidad and Tobago.
